Welcome to Broarp Inn!

The Broarp Inn lies between Eksjö and Nässjö, south east of the turning towards Sävsjö (the older road was situated south of the Inn. That is why that side of the house has had more work done on it).

There has been a Inn on this site since the seventeenth century. The first known innkeeper was Niclas Håkansson and he had the licence from 1662 until 1697. For a long period of time there were two inns at Broarp who took turns every other week to be open. The larger of the two is owned by the association called Broarps Vänner (The friends of Broarp) and is open for visitors at certain times or by appointment. The somewhat smaller is a private dwelling. The last innkeepers were the Broman family, who continued the business until the middle of the 1920’s.

The age of the building is difficult to determine. We have arrived at the conclusion that some sort of building stood on this site in the year 1692, when a taxation record (protocol) was drawn up for the property. Dendro-chronological tests (drilling in the wood) in the part of the present building that we judge to be the oldest showed the age to be 1756. We can therefore assume with moderate certainty that the present building was erected shortly after this date.

The height has probably been raised to 1¾ floors during the 1790’s and raised and widened to the measurements of approx. 13.2 x 12.4 meters around the year 1850. A veranda has been added around the year 1900, otherwise the present form of the house has not been changed since the addition in 1850. Maintenance has been insufficient for at least the last 50 years, though the roof was tin plated in the middle of the 70’s and helped preserve the building for the future. The building’s framework (the reclining stocks) is by and large in good condition. A lot of effort has gone into restoring windows and panelling and at the same time repair a severe subsidence in the northeast corner.

The insufficient maintenance of the interior has at the same time had a positive and unique effect as no changes have been made since the 1930’s.

The house contains 12 fireplaces: 2 tiled stoves, 5 pipe stoves, 1 oven, 2 kitchen stoves and 2 hearths.

A project has been started to enable a well thought-out and antiquarian way of restoring the building. Many acute measures have been taken but a lot of interior restoration remains. The projects aim is to combine suitable methods so that the buildings different periods and unique cultural worth is preserved.

In 2002 a voluntary association, Broarps Vänner, was founded. The aim of the association is to carefully restore and save the building for the future. The house is used as a cafeteria, for art exhibitions, functions, displays, second-hand markets etc.

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions, a point of view or if you would like to support our association by becoming a member! A membership fee of 150 Skr is recommended (your economical situation decides) and the Post Giro number is 20 13 88-6.
